Effective July 16, 2022, the number 988 will become active for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (NSPL). On and after this date, you will be directed to the NSPL when using the 988 prefix without the area code.

For customers to become accustomed to the process, Chariton Valley implemented 10-digit dialing (area code and seven-digit number) on November 1, 2021. As of this date, calls not utilizing 10 digits were not carried out, and customers received an automated message of an incomplete status.

If you have not already done so, we encourage you to reprogram any preset local numbers to include 10-digits for your dialing convenience and to avoid any misdialed calls to the NSPL on or after July 16th.

Long-distance calls still require a “1” to be entered prior to dialing the number and charges may still apply for these calls.

While the change to 10-digit dialing impacts our calling habits, those needing the NSPL’s assistance will soon be able to make contact quicker with the implementation of the 988 number.
