MACON, MO – January 10, 2025 – On Thursday, January 9, Chariton Valley hosted a ceremony at Salisbury City Hall to announce the designation of Salisbury as a Smart Rural Community℠ (SRC)!
This prestigious designation highlights the use of Chariton Valley’s fiber network for the betterment of the community and the work of many community leaders who labor tirelessly to strengthen Salisbury economically while maintaining its unique rural charm.
As Ryan Johnson, CEO and President of Chariton Valley, explained, “Smart Rural Communities℠ is a national network of communities powered by innovative rural broadband providers building a brighter future for small-town America. The program promotes rural broadband and its role in supporting innovative economic development, effective education, efficient energy distribution and use, state-of-the-art health care, and other prominent issues for rural America.”
Melanie Latamondeer, Salisbury Chamber of Commerce President, Owner/Editor of The Chariton Marquee, 2nd Ward City Council Alderman, 911 Board Member and Larry’s Warrior Foundation Founder/Board Member, submitted the award application in which she shared that with high-speed fiber internet, Salisbury has seen economic growth, new retail businesses, increased educational opportunities and that the work-from-home capability is bringing many families back to the area.
“Receiving the Smart Rural Community℠ designation from Chariton Valley marks a significant milestone in Salisbury’s journey toward future growth!” Latamondeer stated. “One of the key areas of opportunity is attracting families where at least one partner works remotely. Salisbury offers an ideal environment for these families, combining strong educational opportunities with the sense of belonging that comes from living in a small, close-knit community. Our schools are equipped to prepare students for the future by providing a solid foundation in technology, while the reliability and stability of fiber connectivity ensure seamless remote work. From daycare facilities to schools and technology-dependent businesses, the Smart Rural Community℠ designation highlights the vital role that advanced infrastructure plays in supporting growth and fostering a thriving community spirit. Senator Rusty Black and Sarah Graff, Director of Special Projects for Congressman Sam Graves, were in attendance. Both expressed appreciation for this designation and reiterated the importance of high-speed fiber internet in our rural communities.
Latamondeer accepted the SRC certificate on behalf of the community.
