Congratulations to Ches and Peggy Niemeier of New Cambria for being selected as Chariton Valley’s 2026 Cooperative Couple of the Year!
A love story that began with a blind date in Glasgow has grown into a lifetime of devotion as Ches and Peggy Niemeier celebrate their enduring marriage, first united in 1960 after a year and a half of courtship.
The couple first met through a mutual connection—his brother was dating her friend—and from the start, their bond felt effortless. Ches recalls being immediately drawn to her, saying he “couldn’t stay away because she was so pretty.” She remembers simply knowing he was the one, sharing that they always got along and that their relationship unfolded smoothly.
During their courtship, the pair enjoyed evenings out in Marceline, particularly attending local dances that filled their early years with joy and connection.
Their wedding day, March 1, 1960, was marked by an unforgettable winter storm. A deep snow from a blizzard blanketed the area, yet family and friends gathered to celebrate. The reception and dance were held in the basement of the school in Wien—now known simply as “the hall”—creating warm memories among the cold.
The couple has navigated many of life’s challenges, but this past winter proved exceptionally difficult. Peggy suffered a broken back while moving a chair, requiring months in the hospital and recovering, followed by a stroke. Shortly after, Ches battled pneumonia. Through it all, they supported one another with unwavering strength and compassion and say they are looking forward to the arrival of spring.
The couple is proud of their four children. Their family has grown abundantly over the years, blessing them with numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. They share deep gratitude for the many years they have been blessed to spend together. When asked, what is the secret to a long, happy marriage? Ches says with a smile: “Do whatever Peggy wants.” Peggy adds “Always work on getting along and we’ve always gotten along well.”
The couple credits spending quality time together, especially traveling often as an important part of maintaining their bond.
Their message to newlyweds and longtime partners alike is simple Ches said, “Get over the arguments and keep going. Work your way through disagreements and keep moving forward together.” Ches and Peggy were very honored to be chosen as the 2026 Cooperative Couple of the year.

I’d like to nominate Ches & Peggy Niemeier for the Valentine Couple of the Year. They’ve been married for over 65 years and are more in love now than they were when they married. They do everything together, go everywhere together. To this day, Ches will hold Peggy’s hand when they’re walking down the stairs or a hill and walks in front of her to make sure, she gets where they’re going safely. They always share a drink from McDonalds and Peggy butters Ches’s toast to this day. When Peggy was in the hospital for an extended period, Ches stayed with her day and night and held her hand. A love like theirs is few and far between and it’s beautiful to watch.
