Paris, MO — July 10, 2025 — Chariton Valley is proud to announce the purchase of land in Paris, Missouri, for the construction of a new central office that will enhance broadband infrastructure and services for the region. As part of this exciting development, Chariton Valley is also taking steps to honor the community’s heritage and values.
The property includes a majestic tree estimated to be over 100 years old. While the tree must be removed to accommodate the new facility, Chariton Valley has worked closely with the City of Paris, including Mayor Chris Popkes and City Superintendent Barb McCall, to ensure the tree’s legacy lives on.
“We understand the emotional connection many in the community have to this tree,” said Ryan Johnson, President and CEO of Chariton Valley. “Progress sometimes requires difficult decisions, but we are committed to honoring the past while building for the future.”
In collaboration with local woodworkers—many of whom craft items for charitable causes—Chariton Valley will donate the tree’s wood to be repurposed for community projects. These skilled craftspeople have a history of transforming meaningful materials into community treasures, as they did when the old school building was taken down.
“This is a great example of how we can turn a concern into a celebration of community spirit,” said McCall. “We’re grateful to Chariton Valley for listening and working with us to find a respectful solution.”
Local woodworker Denny Nobis added, “This tree has been part of our town’s landscape for generations. Being able to use its wood to create something meaningful for the community is a way to honor its legacy and give back at the same time.”
The new central office will serve as a hub for expanding fiber Gigabit internet access in Monroe County and surrounding areas, reinforcing Chariton Valley’s commitment to rural connectivity and economic development.
“We hope this gesture helps ease the transition and reminds everyone that progress and preservation can go hand in hand,” Johnson added.
