Playing video games is fun. Playing a video game that lags or freezes? Not so much.

Whether you use video games to simply unwind at the end of a long day or as a way to tap into your competitive nature and rise in rank, slow performance can ruin a game in seconds. But do you really need to rush out and purchase a new laptop or the latest gaming PC? Not necessarily.

First, try out these seven simple tips to achieve a smoother gaming experience from your laptop.

#1: Keep it clean.

Is your laptop covered in smudges, snack crumbs, and dust? It may be time for a good old-fashioned cleaning. Dirt and dust can slow your laptop’s performance, so reach for some canned air and microfiber cloths to get it spic and span.

#2: Turn on high performance mode.G

Most laptops come on a default setting designed to conserve battery power. While this may work fine for checking email or typing in a Google Doc, it doesn’t make for the best gaming experience. Check your settings to make sure your computer is in high performance mode for a faster, smoother game.

#3: Plug it in.

When a laptop is having to manage battery power efficiently, performance slows. Fortunately, plugging into a power outlet is a simple fix that can make a big difference. This will be especially important if you’ve followed the second tip, because high performance mode can drain your battery much more quickly.

#4: Close all other apps or activate Game Mode.

Multitasking is the enemy of productivity—it’s true for you, and it’s true for your laptop. Let your computer “focus” on the task at hand by closing out all other apps while you’re gaming. In Windows 10, Game Mode makes this easy. Simply press WIN + G and activate Game Mode to end or suspend background tasks for an optimal gaming experience.

#5: Update everything …

Updating your computer is a great way to improve speed and performance with just a few clicks of the mouse. Make sure your system drivers, graphics card, and DirectX software are all up to date for the best results.

#6: … But not automatically.

Updates are good, but an automatic update running in the background is sure to slow your game to a crawl. While you can’t (and shouldn’t) avoid installing updates forever, block automatic updates so they don’t download in the middle of a game without your permission. Instead, install newly available updates as soon as possible on your own, so your laptop and games can keep running smoothly.

#7: Evaluate your current internet service.

The type of internet you have makes a huge difference in your gaming experience. For example, fiber internet from Chariton Valley is SuperFast with lots of bandwidth (how fast data moves across a home network). There is little to no waiting when downloading a game and keeping up with others when gaming online isn’t an issue.
