2024 Cooperative Couple of the YearCongratulations to Leon and Martha Creed of Cairo for being selected as Chariton Valley’s 2024 Cooperative Couple of the Year!

The Chariton Valley Couple of the Year Leon and Martha Creed have been married for 65 years. They met in Cairo High School (Northeast R-IV High School). Leon had his eye on Martha through the years. During Martha’s high school years, she was dating someone else. When high school was over Martha went her own way. Leon at this time noticed she was single, and they started dating. They enjoyed going to the movies in Moberly. There were 3 different locations at that time and a drive-in theatre. They also enjoyed going to eat at A&W Root beer in Moberly.

After 4 years of dating, they decided to tie the knot on a nice fall evening on October 24th, 1958. They both worked until noon that day. They had a simple and small wedding at the Cairo Baptist Church. The altar was decorated with baskets of flowers and candles. Cake and punch were served at the reception in the back of the church.

They have managed to make their marriage work by keeping faith, attending church, and doing what was needed to do to get through the tough times. Some of their toughest times were losing their parents. Grandparents and Leon’s 15-year-old brother. Martha said, “to always count your blessings and be thankful for each day.”

The advice Leon would like to provide for married couples today, “instead of a big fancy wedding spend less on the wedding and put more effort into their marriage.”

As the Chariton Valley 2024 Cooperative Couple of the Year, Leon and Martha received a $100 gift certificate to Ugo’s Pizzaland, our exclusive contest sponsor, and a gift basket and flowers from Chariton Valley. Thank you to all who participated! Congratulations again, Leon and Martha!

I think Leon and Martha Creed should win the 2024 couple of the year. They just celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in October. They are long standing cooperative members. They’ve weathered so many changes together and have stuck together. It’s a cliche to say they are the nicest people you’ve ever met and would give anyone the shirt off their back but in this case it’s true. I thankfully get to call them grandma and grandpa. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve run into someone in the community who knows them, and they always gush at how great they both are and are amazed at how active they still are. I would agree whole-heartedly. If I did my math right, they would have 4 children, 12 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and 1 great, great grandchild. Most major holidays you can find all 50+ of us gathered in their home. They are in their mid-80s now and still get out to the great grandchildren’s ball games and activities. They support the community and their church. I think it would be a wonderful late anniversary present for them to win this award and I think they would be tickled to win it.

Congratulations Leon and Martha Creed – Chariton Valley’s 2024 Valentines Couple of the Year!
